This is an excellent time to teach your child healthy oral hygiene practices that will help safeguard their primary teeth. Help your young children use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste to brush their teeth twice daily. Make sure your youngster does not swallow the toothpaste and spits it out. Limiting sugary foods and drinks and brushing your child’s teeth after meals can also help avoid cavities.
Change your child’s toothbrush every one to three months or shortly after an illness, and start flossing when his or her teeth are in contact. To lead by example, let your child watch you brush your teeth.
Children & Adolescents Dentistry in Mississauga
Your child’s baby teeth will start to fall out between the ages of 6 and 8 when the permanent teeth start to fill in. Except for wisdom teeth, most permanent teeth should be in place by the age of 13.
Make sure your youngster flosses once and brushes their teeth at least twice a day. Eat less sugary foods to help avoid tooth decay. Reduce snacking and encourage your youngster to consume a balanced, healthy diet. In order to protect their teeth while playing sports, we also advise your youngster to wear a mouthguard when necessary.
Teens Dentistry in Mississauga
The teenage years are a challenging time for many parents. With increased independence and less supervision, it can be hard to keep up on oral hygiene practices when you’re busy taking care of your child’s other needs — but it’s essential that we teach them proper habits!
At Onyx Dental our team will provide tips & advice during every visit so families can help their teens and younger children build habits that will make their teeth last a lifetime. The greatest method for teens to maintain healthy teeth and gums is to continue excellent oral hygiene.
Whether they have braces on or not, they should:
- Brush their teeth twice daily
- Floss once per day between teeth and below the gumline
- Cut back on sugary food consumption
- Reduce snacking and consume a nutritious, balanced diet
- When playing sports, use a mouthguard to protect their teeth
