What is Sleep Apnea and How Does it Relate to Snoring?

Chronic snoring can be an underlying condition of sleep apnea which can increase your risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. Seeking treatment can help improve your sleep quality and overall well-being.

Snoring Constricts Your Airways

Snoring may just seem like an annoying habit, but it can indicate a more serious issue. It occurs when air can’t properly travel through your mouth or nose. When the airway is constricted, it can cause the air to be inhaled at a higher rate and pressure, causing the tissues at the back of your throat to vibrate and make a loud sound. But, it can also cause your breathing to stop completely multiple times throughout the night. If left untreated, other health issues can arise and you may require surgery.

Signs You May Have Sleep Apnea

You’re not alone – sleep apnea is more common than you think. In fact, it’s the most common sleep-related breathing disorder. Symptoms to be aware of include:

  • Loud snoring
  • Waking up with headaches frequently
  • Waking up with sore/dry throat
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Waking up in the night choking/gasping
  • Trouble focusing throughout the day
  • High blood pressure

Sleep Apnea Appliances

There are a few ways that sleep apnea can be treated including a CPAP machine, dental appliances, and NightLase® therapy. In our dental office here in Erin Mills, we utilize NightLase® therapy – a non-invasive laser treatment that works to tighten the tissue that causes contractions, increase the production of new collagen in the palette, and lighten the effects of sleep apnea. While it’s not permanent, it does last approximately 12-24 months and will require annual treatments.

The third molars, or wisdom teeth, can often erupt at odd angles, becoming impacted and interfering with other teeth. Since this can cause a wide range of issues, impacted wisdom teeth must be removed. This may be necessary even if you are currently experiencing no overt problems, since they may get worse over time. Wisdom tooth extraction may require additional surgery to remove gum tissue partially or entirely covering your tooth.
